Curriculum

  • Lesson 1: Creative writing practices to orient students to journalism, overview of the journalism program, and laying out of goals.


  • Lesson 2: Essential rules relating to AP style, attribution, and quote formatting. My team and I also covered news writing, inverted pyramid style, and news ledes.


  • Lesson 3: Interviewing basics and question-making/research procedures. Included two FYJI-arranged guest interviews.


  • Lesson 4: Covered features, opinions, sports, and photojournalism, and we explained the core structure of a student-run newspaper. 


  • Lesson 5: Journalism ethics, credible research, careers in journalism and schools for journalism, and capstone introduction. Introduction to student-run newspapers, including FYJI guidance on developing one.
