Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at contact@fyji.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

At FYJI, our mission is to spark journalistic passion within the hearts of middle school students, ensuring that every young mind, regardless of age, has the opportunity to amplify their voice within their community.

There are many ways to get involved with FYJI, such as volunteering, donating, or contacting us at contact@fyji.org.

FYJI's services includes after-school electives with seasoned real-world journalists and  experienced high school journalists. Through a combination of slideshows, discussions, and practice workshops, middle school students gain the experience necessary to run a student-led publication.

  • Lesson 1: Creative writing practices to orient students to journalism, overview of the journalism program, and laying out of goals
  • Lesson 2: Essential rules relating to AP style, attribution, and quote formatting. My team and I also covered news writing, inverted pyramid style, and news ledes.
  • Lesson 3: Interviewing basics and question-making/research procedures. Included two FYJI-arranged guest interviews.
  • Lesson 4: Covered features, opinions, sports, and photojournalism, and we explained the core structure of a student-run newspaper.
  • Lesson 5: Journalism ethics, credible research, careers in journalism and schools for journalism, and capstone introduction. Introduction to student-run newspapers, including FYJI guidance on developing one.

Please reach out to nathan@fyji.org for samples of the curriculum.

Transparency notice: Slides are developed by professional journalists in Pasadena-based news organizations,  students at top 10-ranked universities, and high school students in California.
