Formative Youth Journalism Initiative

Our Mission Statement

At FYJI, our mission is to spark journalistic passion within the hearts of middle school students, ensuring that every young mind, regardless of age, has the opportunity to amplify their voice within their community.

We are a student-led organization, committed to empowering the next generation of communicators and writers. FYJI serves as a support branch for middle schoolers as they embark on their journalistic journeys through the production of independent student-led publications at their respective schools. Through our comprehensive journalism workshops, engaging electives, and well-informed guidance, we aim to nurture the talents of these young minds.

A Vision for Journalism

Our vision is simple yet profound: to broaden the horizons of middle schoolers by introducing them to the thrilling world of journalism. We believe that when students have the tools, knowledge, and encouragement they need, they can become powerful voices for change in their communities.

What defines journalism at the middle school level?

  • Releasing monthly, bi-monthly, or tri-monthly issues regarding school news, school athletics, opinion pieces, or entertainment
  • Opportunities for leadership positions and collaboration among fellow peers.
  • Opportunities for networking and developing interpersonal skills through interviewing and frequent communication.

This initiative is dedicated to empowering the next generation of journalists, breaking accessibility barriers to extracurricular education.
