FYJI is goal-oriented and hopes to fulfill these goals with student and school participation. Through free after-school electives, including free journalistic tutoring and writing lessons, students gain vital experience. We work with schools at an administrative level to host these programs. Additionally, we work individually with students who require extra aid.
Working with the CalMatters Youth Journalism Initiative, led by Michael Lozano, we are developing a universal journalism and media literacy curriculum for middle school students. Approved by teachers, journalist advisors and newsmagazine publishers, this curriculum is open and accessible to all
FYJI leaders work to supplement individual programming initiatives by making systematic changes in school districts. FYJI leaders frequently attend school board meetings and fireside chats to gain insight into the education system and where a journalism education can fit in.
Pasadena Weekly covered FYJI's summer journalism program at the Alma Fuerte Public Charter School in Pasadena where the students learned from the FYJI curriculum and established the Alma Fuerte Post
FYJI wrote an editorial for Local News Pasadena (localnewspasadena.com) regarding the value of youth journalism, particularly in middle schools.
The South Pasadenan recognizes FYJI, in partnership with the Pasadena Media Foundation, for its work in resurrecting the annual "Sí se puede" Essay Contest.
FYJI Executive Director and Founder Nathan Wang spoke at the National High School Journalism Convention this April in Seattle, WA on the importance of advocating for youth journalism. He covered two fronts: individualized journalism education in school, as well as systematic school district reform.
