FYJI is goal-oriented and hopes to fulfill these goals with student and school participation. Through free after-school electives, including free journalistic resources and writing lessons, students gain vital experience. Our goal is to spark and foster student learning and interest in journalism and writing.
While the middle-school newspaper experience may feel premature, FYJI is opening up a student blog for middle schoolers to contribute to. Through this, we hope to open up avenues for students to explore their interests in writing and go through a similar editing process as one would see in high school and real-world journalism.
Activism has been the name of FYJI's game for years, and it is where we hold the most hope for change. FYJI leaders frequently attend school board meetings and fireside chats to gain insight into the education system and where a journalism education can fit in.
Pasadena Weekly covered FYJI's summer journalism program at the Alma Fuerte Public Charter School in Pasadena where the students learned from the FYJI curriculum and established the Alma Fuerte Post
FYJI wrote an editorial for Local News Pasadena (localnewspasadena.com) regarding the value of youth journalism, particularly in middle schools.
