FYJI is goal-oriented and hopes to fulfill these goals with student and school participation. Through free after-school electives, including free journalistic resources and writing lessons, students gain vital experience. Our goal is to spark and foster student learning and interest in journalism and writing.
Through personalized slideshow presentations and interactive learning, students will better understand what it means to be a journalist in preparation for both high school newspaper writing or even a potential future career.
Why trust high schoolers? High school is the vital connection between middle school and college. There are opportunities that high schoolers have that are an intermediate between resources middle schools have and the extensive resources that universities have. Therefore, FYJI is primarily high-school led because of a high schooler's unique ability to connect to middle schoolers without feeling too detached from the middle school experience.
While the middle-school newspaper experience may feel premature, FYJI is opening up a student blog for middle schoolers to contribute to. Through this, we hope to open up avenues for students to explore their interests in writing and go through a similar editing process as one would see in high school and real-world journalism.
